Some of the most impressive things in the world of high-performance construction don’t come from large coastal factories or multinational manufacturers. They come from places like Colby, Kansas, population just a few thousand, where a family-owned shop is quietly producing some of the best windows and doors made anywhere on earth.
That shop is Advantage Architectural Woodwork, and it was built on a foundation of passion, craftsmanship, and a huge commitment to quality. Owner Bob Holloway first fell in love with woodworking as a teenager, building furniture for a 4-H project at age 14. That early spark sent him to Pittsburg State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Wood Technology with a minor in business. After winning the state drafting competition and touring the school’s wood technology labs, he knew it was exactly where he needed to be.
After college, Holloway honed his skills at Merritt Woodwork in Cleveland before returning to Kansas to run a cabinet shop. Then, in 2010, a woodworking magazine advertisement changed the trajectory of everything. It led him to a workshop in Ouray, Colorado, where he discovered European window and door technology unlike anything widely available in the United States. He came home, broke ground on a shop on his family’s farm with the support of his parents and the Dane G Hansen Foundation, and Advantage Architectural Woodwork was born.
German Technology, American Craft
Advantage partners with smartwin, a German company whose window systems are engineered to Passive House standards and certified by the Passivhaus Institut in Darmstadt. The smartwin system holds the distinction of being the first window system to receive PHI certification as a complete system, and it has won the prestigious Component Award for Windows three times in a row. They are among the most rigorous performance certifications in the fenestration industry and are recognized globally.
The combination of German engineering and Holloway’s extraordinary craftsmanship yields a product that competes with the finest windows and doors made anywhere in the world. Advantage produces PHI-certified wood windows and doors that meet Passive House standards for air tightness, thermal performance, and durability. The quality is not simply a matter of aesthetics, though these products are undeniably beautiful, it is worked into every joint, every seal, and every carefully selected material.
The proof shows up on real job sites. When builder Matt Brill of Bauen Build set out to construct Boulder, Colorado’s first PHI-certified Passive House, the Forest Haus, he chose smartwin Solar windows and doors as the fenestration solution. The project helped to achieve a blower door result of 0.31 ACH50, a number that speaks directly to the airtight precision these products demand and deliver.
A Growing Legacy
What started as a single shop on the family farm has grown steadily. The Advantage factory has already doubled in size since its founding, and Holloway is actively considering further expansion to meet demand for his products. In 2018, his impact on the industry earned him a nomination for the Wood Industries’ 40 Under 40, a recognition reserved for those making a genuine mark on the field.
None of it has happened by accident. It has happened because Holloway made a decision early on to pursue not just good windows, but the best windows, products that could stand alongside the finest fenestration made anywhere in the world. That decision, backed by years of skilled craftsmanship in a Kansas shop on the family farm, is what Advantage represents.
